AUDITIONING FOR MF
Here's how it works:
At the beginning of each semester Mizzou Forte holds auditions based on the needs of the group. We could take 9 new singers or 0, it depends on how many returning members we have. We'll post on our Facebook and on the website the dates, times and locations of all auditions. You might even find an audition flyer in your mailbox if you live in a dorm.
On the night of auditions, we'll meet as group, and have all those auditioning fill out an information sheet with some basic questions. You'll then leave the audition room and, one at a time, enter to audition for Mizzou Forte.
Here's what you'll do:
On entering the room, we'll have you sing roughly one minute of a song of your choosing. We want to see you at your best! Don't be alarmed, someone will cut you off after about a minute. We do that to everyone.
The music director (a current member) will take you through a brief range test. It's not hard, don't freak out about it. We just want to see what voice part you are best suited for. After all, we can't take 4 sopranos and no altos!
Following that, you can ask us any questions, and expect that someone will ask you a question or two as well.
Then you can go home! We'll let you know the following day the results of the audition.
---BUT---
Every August, we have TWO ROUNDS of auditions, so we have to hold a callback audition.
Here's some information about callbacks:
Everyone who made callbacks will do a group warm-up with Mizzou Forte. After getting a feel for some group singing, we'll break into groups based on voice parts to learn about 16 bars of a piece of music currently in our repertoire.
We'll then put all the candidates into different sets of groups to sing what you've just learned. We move quickly because we like to hear a lot of different combinations.
After we do that, we might ask certain individuals to sing for us again.
You're done! Callbacks generally last about 45 minutes and you'll know the final results of the whole audition process the following day.

1. Practice, practice, PRACTICE. Mizzou Forte notices those candidates who have put time and effort into preparing their audition song. That means everything must be memorized, and you have a good grasp of the song.
2. We are a performing group. While it would be nice to never show our faces in public, that will never happen. Look alive! Eye contact! Move around! Use your hands! Tell us a story with your song. If you look bored, we will be by your audition. But be aware, there is a fine line between being an appropriate performer and looking crazy. Practice how you look in the mirror.
3. Choose a song that fits your voice type. We can't tell you how many auditions went awry to great singers because of a bad song selection. Be bold in your selection, but make sure you can sing it. None of us will ever sing like Whitney Houston or Josh Groban, so don't try their songs.
4. Have confidence! If you've chosen to audition for MF, blow us away! Shyness and meekness don't go well with performing. Just don't get cocky.
5. If you have any questions about the process, PLEASE email us. We want to give you every advantage possible to do a good job!
6. If you don't make it into Mizzou Forte the first time, ask for feedback from your audition. Use that feedback to come back the next semester to have an even better audition. There ARE people in Mizzou Forte who did not get in on their first audition. Try, try again.
